A little about Adeline Genèe:

Genèe was born to a farmer but by the age of eight had been adopted by her uncle, Alexandre Genèe and his wife. Her uncle, who taught dance lessons, had been coaching her in dance since the age of three.

Her birth name was Anina Margarete Kirstina Petra Jensen.

At the age of ten, Genèe performed her first dancing debut in Oslo, Norway while touring with her uncles company.

In 1897 and for ten years after, she danced at the Empire Theatre in London as the Prima Ballerina. Her last show at this theatre was Coppelia, in which she played Swanhilda.

In 1905, Genèe performed in front of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. She was the first dancer to do so.

In 1907, she set sail for the United States where she would be staring in the musical, The Soul Kiss, which debuted on January 28, 1908. It was such a huge success that it lead to 122 performances and a coast to coast tour.

Annually for the next few years, Genèe traveled to the United States to star in a new show in New York. After, there would be an extended tour.

From 1920-1954, she was president of the Royal Academy of Dance (previously known as the Association of Operatic Dancing of Great Britain). She was the first to obtain that position.

Genèe was the first dancer to be honored in 1950 as Dame of the Order of the British Empire.

Genèe died at the age of 92.
