A Little About Henry Tate:
Born to parents Reverend William and Agnes Tate.

At the age of 13, Tate dropped out of school to work in a grocery shop in Liverpool.

In 1839 at the age of 20, Tate bought a Liverpool grocery business and by 1855 he had expanded to 6 shops.

In 1859 Tate became an associate of the John Wright and Co. sugar refinery. Ten years later he owned the company and renamed it Henry Tate and Sons. Later it would be referred to as Tate & Lyle.

In 1872 Tate was shown a method of cutting sugar loaves into small cubes. He knew right away that this convenient way to sell sugar was a money maker so he bought the licence and made a fortune.

As his prosperity grew he donated large sums of money for philanthropic and education purposes.

Tate started to take an interest in art and built a large private gallery in his house. It became one of the best private collections in England.

In 1897 Tate had a new gallery built, The National Gallery of British Art (Tate Gallery) where his works of art could be displayed after his death.

In 1898 Tate became a baronet.

Henry Tate died at the age of 80.
