A Little About Swami Vivekananda:
Born to orthodox Hindu parents, Vivekananda’s birth name was Narenda Nath Datta.
Vivekananda grew up involved with the Brahmo Samaj, a modern Hindu movement in which his father believed in.
At the age of 18, Vivekananda traveled to met Sri Ramakvishna, a spiritual master that he had heard about. The ways and teachings of Ramakvishna soon had Vivekananda becoming one of his disciples and leaving Brahmo Samaj behind.
Ramakvishna practiced not only Hindu rituals but also the spiritual aspect of religion. He believed that all religions lead to God.
In 1886 Ramakvishna passed away leaving Vivekananda to become leader of the monastic disciples.
In 1893 he represented the Hindu religion at the World Parliament of Religions which was held in the United States. His speech created a standing ovation.
In 1894 he decided to create an organization that taught and practiced spiritual philosophies, the Vedanta Society.
Ramakvishna was a strong advocate for the emancipation of Indian women.
His speeches announced that all world religions should live in harmony. Never did he mention of one religion being superior to another.
Vivekananda died of a possible blood vessel which ruptured in his brain at the age of 39.
