A Little About Lala Lajpat Rai:
Born to Munshi Radha Krishna Azad and Gulab Devi.

Rai received his elementary education at Government Higher Secondary School where his father was employed as a teacher of the Urdu language.

In 1880 Rai enrolled in Government Collage at Lahore to obtain a degree in law. It was at this school that he became friends with many Indian patriots and future freedom fighters. Five years later he graduated and started his legal practice. But he soon decided that his passion was more with social work than with legal practices.

Rai became a member of the Indian National Congress. He and two others, Bai Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, were soon known as the Lal-Bal-Pal trio. These men were the first Indian leaders to call for independence for India.

In 1920 the All India Trade Union Congress was founded. Rai became its first president.

In 1921 Rai founded a non-profit organization, The Servants of the People Society. His growing popularity made him a potential threat to the British Raj and so he was imprisoned (1921-1923).

In 1925 Rai gave a speech so inspiring that it compelled numerous Hindus to join the national movement for independence.

In memory of his mother, Rai established a trust in hopes of a hospital that would treat women suffering from Tuberculosis. In 1934 the Gulab Devi Chest Hospital opened.

Rai wrote several books during his life which includes, United States of America: A Hindu’s Impression and a Study and Unhappy India.

Lala Lajpat Rai died due to injuries he sustained during a protest at the age of 63.
