American middle distance runner who won 6 Olympic medals.

A Little About Jim Lightbody:
Born James Davies Lightbody

Lightbody competed for the Chicago Athletic Association while a student at the University of Chicago.

At the Olympics in 1904, Lightbody won individual races by surging in speed each time he entered the homestretch.

Although never having participated in a steeplechase race before, Lightbody won this event and achieved his first Olympic victory.

He went on to win the 800-metre run three days later.

In 1904 Lightbody won the 1,500 metre race, setting a world record at 4 minutes 5.4 seconds.

In 1905 while participating in the half-mile and mile races, Lighbody won National Amateur Athletic Union victories.

In 1906 he won a gold medal by winning the 1,500 metre race.

Lightbody also won a silver medal, coming in second to his teammate, Paul Pilgrim in the 800 metre run.

Jim Lightbody died at the age of 71.
