A Little About Caroline Herschel:
When Herschel was 10 she caught typhus which stunted her growth forever.
In 1772, at the age of 22, Herschel moved to Bath, England where she lived with her brother, William.
William’s hobby was astronomy and he liked to make powerful telescopes that looked far into space.
William quit his job as an accomplished musician and conductor, to begin a career in astronomy, while apprenticing Herschel.
With Herschel’s help the two developed the modern mathematical approach to astronomy.
In 1783, Herschel located three new nebulae, which are clouds of gas or dust in space where stars are formed.
Between 1786-1797, Herschel found 8 comets.
Herschel wrote astronomical catalogs of which two are still in use today.
In 1846, on her 96th birthday, Herschel was presented with the King of Prussia’s Gold Medal of Science.
Caroline Herschel died at the age of 97.
