A Little About James E Casey:
Due to his father’s failing health, Casey had to start working at the age of 11 to help support the family.
In 1907, at the age of 19, Casey and a friend, Claude Ryan decided to start a small messenger service. They called it the American Messenger Company and it consisted of two bicycles and 6 messengers.
In 1913 the company decided to merge with Evert McCabe’s Motorcycle Messengers and began to focus on delivering packages.
The American Messenger Company was soon delivering by brown trucks and the company was renamed the United Parcel Service.
In 1919 Claude Ryan sold his shares in the company but stayed on holding different positions, including president.
In 1930 the United Parcel Service had clients such as Lord & Taylor and James McCreery and Co.
United Parcel Service grew rapidly after WWII and expanded over the years to deliver nationwide and become a global giant.
In 2002 Casey became a member of the U.S. Department of Labor Hall of Fame.
Casey founded two programs that pertain to helping children, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Casey Family Programs.
James E Casey died at the age of 95.
