A Little About Melanie Klein:
Born Melanie Reize. Her father was a dentist and her mother was the daughter of a Rabbi.

From the age of 14 Klein’s dream was to attend medical school.  Family financial problems made that not possible.

At the age of 21 she married an industrial chemist, Arthur Klein.

In 1910 the Klein family moved to Budapest. Klein, who suffered from depression, began seeing a psychoanalyst, Sandor Ferenczi.  Ferenczi saw the intellect and potential that Klein possessed. He suggested that she begin psychoanalyzing her children to see what she could come up with.

Klein was the first psychologist to view a child at play and as a technique of therapy. This led to the development of play therapy.

Klein spent most of her life working on her theory of child development.

She was the first psychoanalyst to challenge Sigmund Freud’s ideas of psychic development.

Klein’s final work analyzed the relationship between mother and infant and the emotions of envy and gratitude.

She wrote several books such as The Psychoanalysis of Children and Envy and Gratitude and Other Works.
