A Little About Kate Greenaway:
Born to parents John and Elizabeth Catherine (Jones) Greenaway. Her father was an engraver and architect. Her mother was a seamstress and owned her own tailoring shop.
As a child Kate showed exceptional artistic abilities. By the time she was 17 she had one several awards for her watercolor and ink drawings.
In 1867 Kate’s first illustrations were published in a book written by William Kingston, Infant Amusements, or How to Make a Nursery Happy.
Kate continued to illustrate around 30 books for the next twelve years.
From 1868-1878 Kate worked for the British publishing company, Marcus Ward and Co.
Kate’s first try at writing a book, Under the Window, became a instantaneous best seller.
The clothing that Kate drew on the children in her books caught the eye of a well known British department store. They decided to match the clothing from her books and use them for a line of children’s wear.
Kate artistic works included greeting cards and book plates.
In 1955 The Kate Greenway Medal was established in her honor. This award is given to those who excel in the art of children’s illustrations.
Kate Greenaway died of breast cancer at the age of 55.
