Famous For/Known For: An American boxer who upon retiring from the ring became a motion picture actor.

A Little About Frank Moran: Born Francis Charles Moran to Martin and Mary Moran.

At the age of 13 Moran decided to find work in order to support the family since his father had died two years previously.

Moran worked shoveling coal for a railroad until he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy so he could provide for his family better. At 17 he was a gunner assigned to the U.S.S. Roosevelt.

After serving four years of active duty Moran attended the University of Pittsburgh where he studied dentistry and played college football.

Moran went on to play professional football for the Pittsburgh Lyceums but soon left to pursue a boxing career.

He was often referred to as “The Fighting Dentist.”

He retired from boxing after 66 bouts. His record was 36 wins with 28 being by knockout, 13 losses, 16 draws, and 1 no contest.

After Moran’s boxing career, he became a film actor, performing in around 150 movies, such as The Prizefighter and the Lady in 1933.

In 2012, Moran was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame.

Frank Moran died from a heart attack at the age of 80.
