A Little About
Anne Bradstreet:
Born Anne Dudley to Thomas Dudley who worked for the Puritan Earl of Lincoln as the chief steward.
Anne’s education, since she never attended public school, came from her father. Since they lived on the estate of the Earl of Lincoln the library there contained a vast wealth of knowledge.
At the age of 16 Anne married Simon Bradstreet, an assistant of her father’s.
In 1620 Anne, her husband and parents decided to sail to the new world. They left the United Kingdom and sailed with other Puritans and settled in Massachusetts Bay.
While raising eight children Anne wrote many poems that pertained to religion and emotional conflicts she experienced.
In 1632, at the age of 19, Anne wrote her earliest poem titled, Upon A Fit of Sickness.
From 1635-1645 Anne wrote many poems that appeared in The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up In America.
In 1642 Anne began dedicating her books to her father, acknowledging him for her education and for the encouragement he gave her.
In 1956 John Berryman wrote a poem as a tribute to Anne, Homage to Mistress Bradstreet.
Ann Bradstreet died from tuberculosis at the age of 60.
