A Little About Auguste Renoir:
Born Pierre Auguste Renoir to Leonard, a tailor, and Marguerite (Merlet), a seamstress.

Renoir started out his painting career by working in a porcelain factory where his job was to paint plates.

In 1862 Renoir attended a school of fine arts, Ecole des Beaux Arts. He also spent time as a student of Charles Gleyre, a Swiss artist. It was at Gleyre’s studio that Renoir met and became friends with other young artists, Frederic Bazille, Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.

Most of the 1860’s were extremely hard for Renoir. His paintings were being rejected, he had little to no money and no place of his own. Then in 1868 an art exhibition, the Salon, accepted his painting, Lise, which was a portrait of his girlfriend, Lise Tréhot.

With the War of 1870 Renoir was drafted into the Army. While part of a cavalry unit he became ill with dysentery and never participated in any action while in the service.

During the late 1870’s Renoir’s popularity began rise. His painting, Madame Charpentier and her children, in 1878 was featured in the Salon. The 1880’s brought about Renoir’s masterpieces, Dance In the Country, Dance in the City and Dance at Bougival.

Over his lifetime Renoir created over two hundred works of art. His artistic talent inspired many other artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

In 1903 Renoir’s health started to decline, first from arthritis which attacked his hands and then in 1912 a stroke caused him to be wheelchair bound.  Although in pain, he would often paint with the brush tied to his crippled hands.

In 1919 Renoir’s portrait, Madame Charpentier, was purchased and hung in the world’s largest museum, the Louve.

Auguste Renoir died at the age of 78.
